Teaching aims:

Knowledge aims:

(1) Students will have a deep understanding of California and Joshua Tree National Park.

(2) Students can know the difference between movies and real situations.

Ability aims:

(1) Students can grasp the main idea and detailed information about the listening materials through fast listening and careful listening.

(2) Students can master the listening strategies, for example, pay attention to the repeated words, take some notes, and so on.

Emotional aims:

(1) Students will know more knowledge around the world and love our country.

(2) Through group work, students can know each other better and their cooperation spirit can be strengthened.

Cultural awareness aims:

(1) Students will know more about California and Joshua Tree National Park.

(2) In learning and daily communication, students can initially notice the similarities and differences between Chinese and foreign cultures.

Key points and difficult points:

Key point:

Students will improve their listening abilities and know more about California according to fast listening and careful listening.

Difficult points:

(1) Students learn some new knowledge around the world and love their own countries.

(2) Students can know each other better and their cooperation spirit can be strengthened.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Warming-up

1. Daily greeting.

2. Ask students what American movie they like best and what their feelings about American life is, so they may give feedback such as “I like the movie The Fast and the Furious and I think Americans like adventures” “La La Land is my favourite movie and it’s so romantic for all of Americans if they feel happy they will sing a song and dance”, etc.

Justification: The topic of the free talk is close to their daily life, every student can talk about their understanding of American movies and American life. Also, it will lay a solid foundation for further study.

Step 2 Pre-listening

1. Present the pictures of the textbook on the screen to students.

2. Ask students: “What can you see in the picture ?”

3. Encourage students to describe those pictures, they may tell “there are some huge stones and it looks deserted”, “I can see some strange trees there”.

4. Continue to ask students one question “Can you have a prediction about the following listening materials according to those pictures and all the exercises on the textbook?”. Then collect some ideas of students such as “It’s about a place of America”, “It’s about California.” Do not comment but tell them they can check their answers later while listening.

Justification: By doing this, students can improve their speaking skills and divergent thinking abilities, as well as attract their interest through predicting.

Step 3 While-listening

1. Fast listening

Play the tape for the first time without stopping and let students find out the main idea of the listening material as well as check their predictions. Remind students to pay attention to the repeated words in the dialogue.

Justification: Students will have a basic understanding of the listening materials through fast listening. Students can also master the listening strategies of catching repeated words while listening.

2. Careful listening

Activity 1: Ask and answer

Play the tape for the second time and let students answer the questions in exercise 2.

(1) Where did George’s tour start and in which direction has he been travelling?

(2) What surprised George about California?

(3) Why did George have the wrong idea about California before he went there?

(4) Why are there so many different kinds of music, food and art in California?

Activity 2: Complete the postcard.

Play the tape for the third time and let students complete the postcard George wrote in the textbook.

Dear Christie,

I’m here in Joshua Tree National Park, in southeastern California. Have been travelling around the state of California for three weeks now. Very different from what I have seen in American movies. Not everyone is rich and not everyone lives near the beach/coast. First travelled southeast through rich farmland then to the central part. They grow everything here including cotton, vegetables, nuts and fruit. Cattle too. Then travelled further southeast into mountains and desert. Californians are very friendly, and they are from many different races and cultures. Every culture has its own festival, music, food and art. Most interesting.

Wish you were here. Give my love to Paula.

Justification: Careful listening can help students to have a deeper understanding of whole listening materials. It can improve their abilities to find out detailed information. Besides, students can review the format of the postcard after activities 2.

Step 4 Post-listening

Activity 1: Collecting

Ask students to imagine a situation “When you are on a call with your friend, and you want to know more about something, think about what questions or expressions you will say”. After that, invite some students to share their answers and write them down on the blackboard.

Activity 2: Making a telephone call

Students work in pairs and sit back-to-back. They will have a telephone call with each other within 5 minutes and the topic should be “A place you have visited recently”. Remind them to use the questions and expressions they collected in the collecting part.

Justification: Through those activities, students’ speaking ability will be promoted and they will collect more useful expressions of making a telephone call, besides, their interest and confidence in learning English can be stimulated.

Step5 Summary and Homework

1. Summary

Ask some students to review what they’ve learned in this class, and make a summary together.

Justification: By doing so, students can evaluate the teaching effects of this class and find out what they have mastered and what they don’t handle.

2. Homework

Find out a movie about California on the Internet and watch that, and then share it with the whole class next class.

Justification: It can improve students’ abilities to find information and abilities to sum up.

Justification: Through showing the video, students can have a basic impression of California and attract their interest in listening.

Step 3 While-listening

1. Play the tape without stop and let students find out the main idea of the listening materials.

2. Play the tape again and remind students to listen carefully, then answer questions in the PPT.

Justification: Through listening twice, students will be more familiar with the topic and improve their listening abilities.

Step 4 Post-listening

Give some keywords on the screen, and let students retell the main idea about George’s travelling.

Justification: Through this activity, students’ speaking ability will be promoted.

Step 5 Summary and Homework

Review what we’ve learned today and make a summary with students together.

Justification: By doing this, students can review what they have just learned and their interest in learning English can be stimulated.

2. Homework

Search on the Internet and find out more culture about California.

Justification: By doing this, students can accumulate extracurricular knowledge around the world.
